Adel Quaker Meeting, part of Leeds Area Quaker Meeting, has about 70 members and attenders and 20 children. We meet in our Meeting House, located in the northern edge of Leeds, West Yorkshire.
The Meeting House was built in 1868, funded by an anonymous donation of £567. It comprises a single meeting room and a small cottage, intended originally to serve the needs of the adjoining Quaker burial ground. A nearby Community Centre building, also standing on Adel Quaker Meeting ground, is owned by the Adel and Ireland Wood Community Association.
For many years, Adel Friends have dreamt of extending the Meeting House, to provide a second meeting room for Children and other uses. We also to wish to provide kitchen facilities, improved access for disabled people and modernised toilet facilities. We have come to realise that we need improved facilities to support growth in the meeting, to strengthen our involvement in the local community and to play our part in the presence of Quakers across the city.
Further discussion of our needs for extending the Meeting House can be found by clicking here.
Early plans for an extension date back to the 1930s, but for various reasons work was never taken forward. New plans have been developed over the last few years, and, at Adel Preparative Meeting of February 2006, it was decided finally to proceed.
The Adel Friends Meeting House Appeal
The total cost of the extension is now estimated as £200,000, of which Adel Meeting has earmarked £55,000 to date. We have revised our orginial estimate (£175,000) following the more detailed design and planning work.
We are making good progress towards the revised target - follow the News Update link above - but still need to continue our fund raising work.
We would be most grateful if you would consider donating to the Adel Friends Meeting House Appeal, and/or organizing a fund-raising event.
Help us fulfil our dream!
